Tucson is rich in Aviation. April 14-15, 2012 marked a page in history with the Thunder and Lightning over Arizona, celebrating the centennial of statehood. Davis Monthan Air Force Base (DMAFB) offered an open house, honoring the past and building inspiration for our kids’ future.
Col. John A. Cherrey, USAF Commander and SMSgt Vincent L. Howard, USAF Commander Chief of 355th Flight Wing welcomed their guests and offered a memorable experience. The air show provided an impressive military and civilian aero performance and static displays.
The Boeing YAL-1, Airborne Laser (ABL) was the first static display as the public came to see the air show. The billions of dollars acquisition weapons program was intended to shoot down enemy theater ballistic missiles with a megawatt-class Chemical Oxygen Iodine Laser (COIL), made its final voyage on Arizona’s Centennial birthday to DMAFB, currently stored at AMARG. Efforts are underway for Pima Air & Space Museum to acquire the aircraft.
