12th Annual Living Legends of Aviation Awards
The event described by Morgan Freeman as "the Academy Awards of Aviation" opened its red carpet procession with aeronautic art presented by ASAA members Mimi Stuart and Michelle Rouch. Kiddie Hawk Air Academy commissioned the artists to create original paintings honoring Buzz Aldrin, Bob Hoover, Sean Tucker and Louis Zamperini.
Rouch created two unique pieces of artwork. "The Unbroken Kiss," inspired by "Unbroken," the biography of WWII airman Louis Zamperini, depicts an airman's unbroken passion for life with a passionate kiss. Her painting "Airshow" shows Sean Tucker’s powerful energetic aerobatics in a corkscrew maneuver ascending in his Team Oracle Challenger III biplane.
Stuart's vibrant EOS "Energy of Subject" style expressionist paintings of Buzz Aldrin, Bob Hoover, and the Moon illuminated the entrance to the Beverly Hilton's Grand International Ballroom.
The ballroom erupted in applause as host John Travolta, Harrison Ford, Cynthia Zamperini-Garris and Bob Hoover took the stage. After the awards gala, the artwork was whisked to the Stardust rooftop stage where John Travolta, Julie Clark, Rick Armstrong, Steven F. Udvar-Hazy and guests celebrated milestone birthdays of Buzz Aldrin and Bob Hoover.
